Ecoplanta, Tarragona, Spain: complete feedstock preparation for Europe’s first commercial waste-to-methanol plant
In August 2025, BMH was selected to deliver the complete feedstock preparation system for Ecoplanta Molecular Recycling Solutions, a Repsol company. The plant, located in El Morell near Tarragona, will be the first in Europe to convert non-recyclable municipal solid waste and biomass into circular methanol at commercial scale.
BMH’s delivery covers the front end of the plant, from waste reception to gasifier feed, built around TYRANNOSAURUS® technology engineered to handle the highly heterogeneous nature of non-recyclable municipal solid waste. Once operational in 2029, Ecoplanta will process up to 400,000 tonnes of waste annually into approximately 240,000 tonnes of renewable methanol — cutting greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 3.4 million tonnes over the plant’s first decade.
Waste to chemicals feedstock preparation: TYRANNOSAURUS® shredders at the core of BMH deliveries
BMH designs, manufactures, and supplies the comprehensive process plant for waste to chemicals feedstock preparation. At the core of BMH’s system are the heavy-duty TYRANNOSAURUS® shredders.
TYRANNOSAURUS® 9900 Primary Shredder is the largest and most advanced primary waste shredders in the world. Built with patented Zero Gap® cutting technology and the Massive Impact Protection System (MIPS®), it delivers the capacity, particle size consistency and reliability that a gasifier feed demands.
BMH delivers the complete front end around it: receiving stations, separation equipment, buffer silos designed on the first-in-first-out principle to keep material moving, dosing systems, and fully enclosed conveyors that eliminate dust and contamination.

Between the waste and the gasifier – BMH engineers the process
The waste processing solution for every waste-to-chemicals project is shaped by the incoming waste composition and the gasifier feedstock specification. BMH delivers the complete plant solution for this part.
Waste streams vary widely: European industrial and commercial waste is typically quite dry and rich in plastic, textile, etc, while Asian municipal waste can contain 60 % moisture and large volumes of food waste. Gasifiers, on their side, typically set strict limits on particle size, moisture level, and other contaminants.
Our feedstock preparation solutions begin with primary shredding, reducing incoming waste to typically around 90 mm. Separation then removes what does not belong in the gasifier: magnetic and non-magnetic metals for recycling, fines such as sand and soil, and inert heavy fractions such as glass, bricks and stones that would not gasify. Depending on the waste composition, additional separation stages may be added. The refined material moves through buffer storage designed on the first-in-first-out principle, then through drying (if needed), fine shredding to the gasifier’s required particle size, and dosing systems that keep the feed steady around the clock.
Technical consultation from the earliest phases of a waste-to-chemicals project
Waste-to-chemicals projects typically span many years from first concept to commissioning, with roughly two to three years for the delivery phase after the final investment decision.
Throughout the development phase, BMH works alongside plant developers to define the feedstock preparation part of the plant: what waste can be processed, how the process is designed, what the yield will be, how much space and power the process requires, and how it integrates with the gasifier’s specifications. This early engineering input on waste processing plant design gives developers the vital technical and commercial input needed to move ambitious projects forward.
